Rubbish in Otautahi

 We should work on improving how we are using our bins, we should reduce what goes to our red bins and balance the other two bins. We should put recyclable plastics like plastic bottles to the right bin because when it gets into the ocean marine animals mistaken it as a food and they end up dying, plastics take about 500-600 years to break down and it also has chemicals in it. 

Researchers proven that whales, fish and other marine life that ending up to shore are cause by litter, about 8.3 million tons of rubbish are discarded in the sea yearly, also every square kilometre has more than 4 billions of microfibers. Microfibers are so small that it can even fit in fish scales.

News Article - Eastern Pacific Problem

Hi, Today in our social studies we are writing  news article outlining the problem in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.  

The problem in Eastern Pacific is debris trapped in the Great pacific Garbage Patch and it is harmful to the marine life. It is harmful to the marine life because when marine animals think it's a food they will eat it and plastics take about 500+ years to breakdown, it will stay in their stomach and make them suffer until they die, also plastics contain chemicals.

Plastics dump are becoming more and more problem, lots of whales are and getting end up on shores with full of plastics in their body. Whale  when they go up to the fertilises phytoplankton when they go sea surface, phytoplankton are very important because it absorbs carbon dioxide and tuns it into oxygen, also it's 4x more than Amazon Rain forest can produce.

How do the plastics get trapped in the Pacific garbage path?

Plastics litter get through the water ways and getting end up to the ocean, then gets through the ocean current and that leads to the garbage patch.

Trashing our Planet | Social Studies

 Today I am going to make a new blog-post about what we are learning in my social studies. So far we have been learning about the ocean plastic pollution, we looked at Happy broadcast which is a news channel that only has positive news. We watched a few videos about people telling us what is happening in the ocean and we answered some questions about it. 

What does plastic pollution do to our ocean? Plastics are bringing more problems to the ocean and for the marine life, plastics take 500 or more years to break down. Also plastics breakdown to small-tiny pieces called micro-plastics. Micro plastics is bad and dangerous because of the chemicals in it and if it is ingested by a marine animals it can block digestive tracts.

How can we help?/What is something you could do to reduce what goes in your red bins? To reduce what goes in your red bins you should put the right trash in the right bins, recyclable items should go to yellow bin, food compost should go in the green bin and non recyclable or organic goes in the red bin.

Metals and Oxygen

 Last week we did we did another experiment it was about making a metal oxide and Today I will be talking about it.

Aim: To make a metal oxide and observe the difference in properties of the product commpared to the reactants.

Equipment: A piece of magnesium, Bunsen burner, safety glasses and metal scissor tongs.

Method:

1. Light your Bunsen burner.

2. Hold your piece of magnesium in the scissor tongs. Ensure you are holding onto the very tip of the              magnesium.

3.  Place the other end of the magnesium into the Bunsen flame ( at the top of the blue flame).

4.  When the magnesium begins to burn,  do not look directly at it, as the light emitted can permanently           damage your eyes.

Observations: The magnesium got very bright when it was burning and became like a powder/ash when it stopped.

Live Aid | Bob Geldof & Midge Ure

In the 1970's Bob Geldof was a Irish singer-songwritter and political activist and also the lead singer of the Boomtown Rats. Their most famous song was "I don't like Mondays realeased in 1979. Bob Geldof was famous for statating the reason for joining a pop band. Bob Geldof was widely recognised for his activism, especially anti-poverty efforts concerning Africa.

Midge Ure was a  Scottish singer involved in several bands, also he was the the frontman for Ultravox. Together with Bob geldof in 1984 they wrote a song called "Do They don't know it's Christmas". This song was a major success around the world, reaching number one in thirteen other countries outside the UK. 

Why did they write Do they know it's Christmas? They wrote this song to raise charity to provide money for the famine relief and also to fund raise for the Ebola crisis in West Africa.    

Give Peace a Chance - John Lennon

Today we are learning a song that John Lennon sang to stop the war in Vietnam. A lot people were against this war that people protested to stop the war. People were saying "Leave Vietnam alone" and they said the war was useless soldiers dying for nothing, they were also spreading awareness about peace and trying to stop the war going on Vietnam because they see no point. When the war was happening John Lennon wanted peace so he wrote a song called "Give Peace a Chance". John Lennon was protesting with people who where against the war. This song was played at a concert called Woodstock, there were half a million came, most of them were protesters that want Peace.

Significance of WW1 - The Last Post

When do you hear this song? It is played on Remembrance Day, on ANZAC Day, sounded at the sited of memorials in the United States, and serves as the background song at the funerals and memorials of those lost in service to their country worldwide. Every ANZAC day they they will play this song while people are having a moment of silence.

Why is this song significant/important to New Zealand? This is important to New Zealand because they sent soldiers to fight along with the British Empire.

What is the History behind the Last post - Why was it played and when? It is played to military funerals and commemorative services as a final farewell and symbolises that the duty of the dead is over and that they can rest in peace.

Music Through Time

Last week in our Social Studies we've studying about slavery. We made our work in a thing called My maps. 

Spirituals is a type of religious song, They sang it and they also dance when all the slaves gather in one place. Spirituals song help slaves uplift slaves, give them hope, church, funerals, and wedding if allowed. It also hid secret message to help them escape. 

Harriet Tubman is an ex-slave famous for helping thousands of slave escape. Harriet Tubman used song to send to send messages to slaves, Harriet Tubman used Wade in the Water help slave escapes trough the underground rail road. The song had hidden meanings like were better to wade in the water so slave catchers and dogs could not sniff them out.
