Crystals

Aim: To learn about a saturated solution and how to make crystals

Definition of solution
A liquid mixture, when something is dissolved into a liquid (eg: sugar in water) 

Definition of saturated
Having or holding as much as can be absorbed of something (when no more sugar or borax can be dissolved into the water)


In groups of three you will make three different types of crystals and compare the results.

Borax Crystals

Ratio; 3 Tablespoons Borax per 1/2 cup water
Materials

1)Cup
2)String
3)Popsicle stick 
4)Water
5)Pipe cleaner

Process

Step 1: Take 3 tablespoons borax 
Step 2: put in on a cup
Step 3: pour hot water
Step 4: mix it
Step 5: Get a Pipe cleaner and twist it in the middle to form star
Step 6: then tie it on the string and attach the other side of the string on the pop sickle stick.

Sugar Crystals

Grow your own Sugar Crystals

Ratio: 1 cup sugar to 1/2 cup water
Materials

1)Cup
2)Water
3)String
4)Popsicle stick
5)Spoon

Process

Step 1: Get a cup 
Step 2: get a string 
Step 3: get sugar
Step 4: pour hot water 
Step 5: mix it
Step 6: tie the string on the pop sickle stick


Salt Crystals

Ratio: 4 Tablespoons salt to 1/2 cup water
Materials

1)Cup
2)Water
3)String
4)Popsicle stick
5)Spoon

Process

Step 1: Get a cup 
Step 2: get a string 
Step 3: get sugar
Step 4: pour hot water 
Step 5: mix it
Step 6: tie the string on the pop sickle stick.

What crystals worked out best and why?: I think the sugar one, because sugar is more likely a crystal. 
Conclusion: I found that if you use cold water it will not work so next time Ill try to put hot water.

The 7 types of crystals
explain how the following crystals are formed?

They formed because when a sugar is on the water they stick together. They like stick to the string , when it is not in the water they don't stick/bunch up.

Flourite (also called fluorspar) is the mineral form of calcium fluoride, CaF2. It belongs to the halide minerals. It crystallizes in isometric cubic habit, although octahedral and more complex isometric forms are not uncommon.

 Wulfenite is a lead molybdate mineral with the formula PbMoO4. It can be most often found as thin tabular crystals with a bright orange-red to yellow-orange color, sometimes brown, although the color can be highly variable.

Tanzanite is a trade name that was first used by Tiffany and Company for gem-quality specimens of the mineral zoisite with a blue color. Tiffany could have sold the material under the mineralogical name of "blue zoisite," but they thought the name "tanzanite" would stimulate customer interest and be easier to market.

 TriclinicIin crystallography, the triclinic (or anorthic) crystal system is one of the 7 crystal systems. A crystal system is described by three basis vectors. In the triclinic system, the crystal is described by vectors of unequal length, as in the orthorhombic system.

Type

Salt
Sea water, pond, sun, evaporates water.

Sugar
Chop it up, squish/roll, juice heat evaporate water and sugar crystallised.

Snowflakes
Dust, water freezes to the dust, more water and wind will freeze the dust.
